Monthly Column
From Sandra’s Study
Rev. Sandra Fees
“Building Connections” is a good theme for our capital campaign. And the campaign is a good thing for our church and for our local community. The campaign will literally build a connection between our historic church building and the row home next door. A study in January of a representative group of members and friends found that a majority supports the effort. The study also found that we have the financial capability to make our vision a reality.
This does not surprise me. The support for the project affirms for me something I already knew about this congregation. This congregation has a commitment and understanding of its role as a liberal faith community and as a good neighbor in the local community. This congregation wants to grow and deepen its spiritual life and fulfill its liberal religious mission in the world. That means we can’t simply rest on the laurels of the past 175 years. We need to be a strong, vital participant now and into the future.
That means being able to welcome and provide hospitality to those who come to our church seeking the transforming power of love. It means being able to provide adequate space for church gatherings – whether of small groups, prayer circles, choir rehearsal, adult education classes, workshops, or book discussions. It means providing meeting facilities for groups in the local community who are challenged to find space elsewhere. It means ensuring a safe and well-equipped facility in which our children, youth, and their teachers can explore religious questions and UU identity together.
This month, you will be contacted by a visiting steward who will ask you to support the campaign. You will be asked to give money. It will take a collective financial commitment of $375,000 to make the project a reality. Each of us can do our part, based on our individual circumstances, to reach that goal. We are up to the task. We can make it happen. And we will.
Warmly,
Sandra
