UU History: Want to Learn More?

October 9, 2014

Keith and Carol Orts (born UUs) are facilitating a video history of Unitarian Universalism.  The first session, open to everyone, will be held Wednesday, October 15 7:00pm at the church.  The initial program covers our history from the year CE 0 to 1533.  Yes, we had history back then.  The following  session will be November 12.  Other sessions will be after the holidays.  You may attend all, or as many as you wish.  Please email us or sign up in the Gerber room so we know how many chairs to set up…See you there. 

Sign up for Adult Spiritual Programs

Copies of the Adult Spiritual Development Programs packet are available after Sunday services and sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board in the Gerber Room. Members and friends will be able to sign up for and indicate interest in programs. 

The packet is also available online here and individuals may sign up or obtain more information by contacting facilitators.

Our Sanctuary Re-dedication Service will be held on Dec. 7 and the bi-annual Congregational Meeting will be held on Dec. 14. Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar. 

RE to offer Grades 4-6 OWL- Our Whole Lives (UUA Sexuality Education)- in Spring 2015!

We are excited to announce that we are now organizing the Grades 4-6 OWL (Our Whole Lives, UUA sexuality education) Program for this Spring here at First UU Berks. To ensure adequate planning time, families will be required to indicate their interest and commitment by November 1st of this year. The Grades 4-6 OWL program is slated to start with a 2-hour family evening orientation on Friday, March 13th.  Seventh graders are also welcome to sign up.

UUs to Host Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

Our congregation will be hosting this year's Interfaith Thanksgiving Service to be held Wednesday, November 26, at 7 pm. Steve Elmarzouky of the Islamic Center will be the speaker, and representatives of other faith communities will also participate. The service will be followed by a reception.

DeBenneville Fund Grant Request for Proposals

The DeBenneville Fund Committee with cooperation from the FUUBC board of directors and our minister is requesting proposals from church committees and groups for the next year’s DeBenneville Fund Grant. This annual grant is 4% of the balance of the DeBenneville Fund, as of the end of the church’s Fiscal Year, June 30th. The grants are awarded to assist projects or initiatives within our church community.

This year’s grant was awarded to the Sanctuary Improvement Project.

Food Pantry Update

Due to the ongoing construction during the Sanctuary Improvement Project, the Food Pantry will be not be held on October 2, 2014. Stay tuned for updates.  Contributions to the Food Pantry can still be received for future use.

The "First Friday Film Series" Debuts in October

The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Berks County will launch a free First Friday Film Series on October 3, 2014 at 7:00PM at 416 Franklin Street. On the first Friday of each month, we will discuss an informative and provocative film raising awareness of racial, immigrant, or environmental justice.

Krista Renenger Named Office Administrator/Communications Director

Krista Renenger has been hired as Office Administrator/Communications Director on September 9, 2014. She brings broad-based administrative skills as well as extensive experience in web development, social media and communications. She previously worked for the Hospice Foundation of America for 12 years. The position is 25 hours per week and she will manage office procedures, facilities use, and schedules; maintain and update member information; perform bookkeeping functions; and coordinate communications functions, including the web site and weekly e-news.

Celebrating Water Communion

On Sunday, September 7, we mark our annual ingathering with the Water Ceremony. We celebrate coming together to begin a new church year by gathering water into a common bowl. Members and friends may bring a small amount of water from a place that is special to them to share.
